A Year in Nature: December 21

As an adult, life can sometimes feel like a long series of rules and responsibilities. There are dishes to wash before resting, meals to plan, children to care for, work to finish, and constant choices about what is right or best. Even small decisions can feel heavy, as if there is always another expectation waiting. Some days, I notice how tightly I hold myself together, trying to do everything well.

When I step into nature, something inside me softens. The air feels wider, and my body remembers how to move without thinking so much. If I want to run across a field, I can. If I want to stand still and look up, I can. No one is watching but the trees, and in their quiet company, I feel free to be simple again. For a moment, I am not measured by what I do or how well I manage. I am just present.

Outdoors, there is room to breathe and to remember what it feels like to move without judgment or expectation. Even a few minutes can feel like a pause from the noise of daily life, a place where the spirit can stretch and settle again.

If today allows, step outside and let yourself move in a way that feels natural, whether that’s walking, standing, or even running for a few seconds just for the joy of it. Notice how it feels to be free in that moment, and carry a little of that lightness back with you.

Hey, I'm Sarah

I’m a wife, mother, and nature enthusiast living a simple, slow-paced life on our small homestead in Ontario. Every day, I find joy in the little things — the wild creatures and plants I meet on my walks, quiet moments on the farm, and the beautiful journey of marriage and motherhood. Here, I share tender stories and photographs from my wild encounters, inviting you into the gentle rhythm of this life.
